Ares V reaches Mars expecting geology, isolation, risk, and history. Instead, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Silas Thorne and pilot Maya Lin begin displaying anomalies that should not exist. As the crew investigates, the evidence points toward a startling possibility: Mars is not changing them. Something near Earth may have been suppressing latent human potential all along.
The mystery is no longer simply, what is happening on Mars? It becomes: what has been happening on Earth?
